The Hull People's Memorial

The Yorkshire Heroes team, Alan Brigham and Charles Dinsdale, have been researching the East Yorkshire Regiment and the Heroes of Hull web sites for almost 20 years and have been asked the same two questions over and over again:

  • Where is the Hull Roll of Honour?
  • Where is the civilian war memorial?

So; we began toying with a few ideas in 2008; some being promising and others just downright potty! We began quietly asking the public what they thought while deciding what to do...

At the hugely successful 2011 Hull Blitz Exhibition at the Carnegie Heritage Centre we were able to conclude that people of Hull really do want a Roll of Honour. We spoke to hundreds of visitors at the 2011 Hull Family & Local History Fair and, once again, the response was an overwhelming vote in favour.

We have also discussed the memorial on TV, radio and in the local press. Our petition on the Hull City Council web site added to the thousands of names we have collected at our events and the result is clear: the people of Hull want a Memorial Roll of Honour.

Have you added your support to the project yet? You can add your voice to the debate and vote for or against the Hull People's Memorial.

Rolls of Honour, Cenotaphs and Memorials

A Roll of Honour is less about remembering the event. It offers a way to honour and respect the people by recording and displaying their individual names.

A Cenotaph is a memorial which is erected to offer a lasting memorial to those military personnel who have fallen in war. It is a 'catch-all' solution in that it covers all wars; not just World Wars One or Two.

The Memorial in Northern Cemetery is little more than a cenotaph for those killed during the Hull blitz. It records no names, nor does it pay tribute to those who live through the bombing; some who have suffered the consequences all of their lives.

The Hull People's Memorial will record the names of those who fell in the city during World Wars One and Two. While it would be impossible to tell the story of everyone who lived through the blitz, our Heroes of Hull web site is trying, and soon you will be able to add your own friends and family members too.

Alan and Charles are committed to ensuring that the Hull People's Memorial will be built. If you feel would like help us in any way, please give us a call on 07856 178885.
